Daily Devotional: September 18, 2023 – Philippians 2:3-4

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. – Philippians 2:3-4

Thoughts on Today’s Verse

Today, we meditate on Philippians 2:3-4, a powerful scripture that reminds us to step outside of ourselves – our perspectives, our wants, our needs – to genuinely consider others.

The glorification of the self is so commonplace in our world today. We are often driven by personal gain and self-fulfilment. Yet, the humble message of Philippians encourages us to view things differently.

How transformative would it be if we started each day selflessly thinking about how we might uplift and serve others, instead of being caught in our selfish ambitions and concerns? When we make room in our hearts for others’ needs, not only does it enrich our relationships, but it also brings us a step closer to growing spiritually.

Reflect on your actions. Ask yourself: ‘Are my actions rooted in selfish ambition or are they driven by genuine concern and care for others?’ Our spiritual journey is a continuous process of introspection and growth, and scripture always illuminates the path. Use today’s verse as a guideline, as you navigate your way.

My Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, lead our focus away from self-serving desires. Inspire in us a deep care for others, building empathy within our hearts.

Teach us humility that sees the worth of others before our own needs. Gift us with wisdom to identify those around us who need our kindness and courage to step forward.

Make us a light of your love, spreading peace through our daily interactions. As we journey through life, mold us, Lord, to live a life of service reflecting Your glory.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
